Counselling and Psychological Services [CAPS] is a student facing service that contributes to and enhances the total university experience of students. CAPS provide high quality innovative and professional services to the university community and encourages an ethos of personal and educational development.


About the role

  • $104K - $117K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Continuing
  • Full-time 35 hours per week

The role of Counsellor Student Life/ CAPS assists UNSW students to have an outstanding learning experience and to reach their full potential. CAPS provide free and confidential counselling and psychological services for students while they are enrolled at UNSW. The counsellor would be conducting short-term evidence-based individual, group and systemic psychological interventions and consult with academic and general staff on student issues.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will:

  • A relevant post-graduate qualification plus demonstrated extension of psychological theories principles and practice gained through substantial and relevant postgraduate work and supervision; or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of higher education, professional training and/or applied psychological experience in assessment and therapeutic intervention
  • Full and current registration as a psychologist and supervisor with the Psychologists’ Registration Board Australia
  • Demonstrated competence in assessment, counselling and psychotherapy for adolescents and adults of different ages and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated empathy for, and understanding of, the issues and concerns exhibited by students undertaking university level studies
  • Demonstrated capacity to design and effectively deliver brief psychosocial education programs
  • Demonstrated professional practice in accordance with State legislation, relevant professional standards and awareness of current professional issues
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise at all levels with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • High level organisational skills including an ability to undertake a range of diverse tasks, to work independently, accurately, and with attention to detail and on-time delivery
  • Ability to prepare complex reports/documents that present a cogent and coherent argument based on analysis and synthesis of information from a range of sources
  • Advanced level of computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
