The Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC) is part of the Division of Research and sees the colocation of major research instrumentation in the University in purpose built high-grade facilities for the study of the structure and composition of biological, chemical and physical materials and includes preparation laboratories, smaller instruments and computing facilities. In addition, MWAC provides the technical/professional support for these instruments. Analytical Centre staff members are expected to contribute to the overall success of the Centre by making a major contribution to Centre initiatives and participating fully in cooperative education and research projects. 

The Opportunity

The Elemental Analysis Facility in the Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre provides elemental analysis services to internal and external research groups using combustion elemental analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, or inductively coupled plasma (ICP) techniques, and the associated sample preparation and method development.

Reporting to the Head of Head of the Solid State & Elemental Analysis Unit (SSEAU), and as a member of the scientific team in the SSEAU, you will provide support for collaborative and fee-for-service projects with internal and external research groups. You will have opportunities for initiating research projects that develop new elemental analysis capabilities to enhance other research programs within UNSW.

About the successful applicant:

You have a relevant degree and extensive use of equipment for elemental analysis and its research applications in chemical, materials or biological sciences including:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design and implementation of new methods for elemental analysis.
  • Detailed knowledge of the operation of either XRF spectrometers, elemental combustion analysers, ICP-OES or ICP-MS instrumentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to liaise with a diverse group of individuals, interpret and present analytical results, and write scientific reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and flexibly within a team environment.
  • Previous experience training and supervising others in the field of Analytical Chemistry within a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities, particularly in a chemical laboratory, and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training
