    About the role:

    The Research Accountant works collaboratively with and provides expert financial advice in relation to research funding to ensure researchers’ needs are thoroughly addressed, stakeholders understand and comply with financial management obligations, and research funds are maximised and managed in compliance with contractual obligations.


    Specific responsibilities include:


  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of research funding, including compliance requirements, spending time frames and allowable expenditure, to proactively identify, mitigate and manage compliance risks.
  • Utilise strong communication skills to interpret funding contracts and convey project budget information in a meaningful and understandable way for non-finance stakeholders to facilitate better financial management and minimise risk of non-compliance.
  • Support the research community by assisting with and delivering on many of the administrational components of research funding, in accordance with contractual obligations and UNSW financial management principles; recording and monitoring the receipt of research monies from granting bodies in line with agreed schedules, resolving discrepancies in timing/amount of funds received, distributing funds to appropriate projects, processing payment requests, raising invoices, recording and reconciling accounting transactions, and preparing financial statements, to ensure financials and expenditure is accurately recorded and in compliance with funding requirements.
  • Leverage relationships and forums across the University to keep abreast of developing financial trends and issues.


About the successful applicant



  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting and studying towards a CA/CPA qualification.
  • Extensive experience in a research accounting/administration environment.
  • Knowledge of research, complex research funding and associated financial management will be a distinct advantage.
  • Ability to relate to non-financial executives in discussing grant rules, restrictions and reporting requirements while understanding operational limitations and effectively modifying the approach required in clearly explaining financial data.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence others, negotiate outcomes and resolve issues to the satisfaction of multiple parties.
  • Strong technical accounting skills with advanced PC/spreadsheet skills and exposure to Business Intelligence solutions.
