UNSW has an ambitious new strategy with a focus on research quality via attraction and retention of high calibre higher degree research (HDR) candidates. The Graduate Research School supports UNSW 2025 strategy implementation through coordination and management of HDR candidates and their supervisors, and works closely with schools and faculties to ensure that HDR processes are managed fairly, efficiently and effectively.

The Assistant Manager is located in the Admissions and Scholarships team within the UNSW Graduate Research School (GRS). The position is responsible for leading the Admissions and Scholarships team to provide high quality service to applicants for Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs and scholarships, for providing expert advice to key stakeholders across HDR policies and processes, and for managing the central research scholarship schemes.

This position supports the Manager, Admissions and Scholarships in contributing to the development of the School’s broader strategies, policies and procedures, and provides advice on University and government rules and regulations governing scholarships for postgraduate research students.

The Assistant Manager reports to the Manager, Admissions and Scholarships, manages two Research Administration Officers (Level 6), and seasonal casuals, and will assist in the day to day supervision and performance of the entire Admissions and Scholarships team (additionally one Level 7, and two Level 5s).

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including a professional and courteous communication style, and a demonstrated ability to express and structure ideas, concepts and information in a clear, concise, accurate and logical way
  • Excellent organisational skills, with proven experience in developing operational plans to manage workflows and meet deadlines in a high volume environment while maintaining quality and accuracy
  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant field with at least four years subsequent relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
