UNSW Art & Design leads Australia with a focus on media innovation and emerging technologies. The Faculty’s approach is interdisciplinary, advancing tradition and challenging existing thinking. UNSW Art & Design is an internationally recognised centre for arts-led transdisciplinary research in science and technology, our strengths span Art Theory and Criticism; Film, Television and Digital Media; Visual Arts and Crafts. The Faculty is comprised of renowned practitioners, researchers and thinkers spanning contemporary visual arts, creativity and culture, design and innovation.


About the role

  • $83K - $89K pro rata plus 17% superannuation and leave loading
  • Continuing appointment
  • 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)


The Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor assists the Faculty with the implementation of its health and safety management systems and ensures that processes align with the requirements of UNSW. The position provides practical solutions to ensure the Faculty complies with all applicable health and safety legislation to minimise risks and prevent injuries in the workplace.


The role of HSE Advisor supports the implementation of the Faculty's Work Health and Safety Operational Plan and the promotion of a continuous improvement approach to health and safety.  The role requires liaising with key stakeholders to facilitate the management of risk associated with the Facility's broad and diverse operations, including document and record generation. The role works closely with technical and academic staff to support students in their endeavours and reports to the Manager, Making Centre.


To be successful in this role you will have:


  • High level data gathering, analysis and reporting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply, interpret, provide advice and contribute to the development of policies, procedures, guidelines, systems, manuals and local practices.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and written/ verbal communication skills including ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Sound time management and organisational skills, ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a high level understanding of WHS requirements within the creative industries and/ or an educational environment.


  • Experience in managing health and safety systems in a large complex organisation.


  • Degree or other tertiary qualification in Health and Safety or related discipline with subsequent relevant work experience, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and/ or experience.
