UNSW Art & Design leads Australia with a focus on media innovation and emerging technologies. The Faculty’s approach is interdisciplinary, advancing tradition and challenging existing thinking. UNSW Art & Design is an internationally recognised centre for arts-led transdisciplinary research in science and technology, our strengths span Art Theory and Criticism; Film, Television and Digital Media; Visual Arts and Crafts. The Faculty is comprised of renowned practitioners, researchers and thinkers spanning contemporary visual arts, creativity and culture, design and innovation.

About the role

  • $71K - $80K plus 17% superannuation and leave loading.
  • Continuing
  • Full time (35 hours per week) or a job share arrangement may be considered.

The Technical Officer 3D provides expert knowledge and technical skills that facilitate making in support of the Faculty’s academic programs, and provides technical support to staff and students, while applying and monitoring the appropriate Work Health and Safety procedures and guidelines.

Based in the Making Centre’s 3D Hub this role will also contribute to supporting all areas of the Art & Design Making Centre.

To be successful in this role you will have:


  • Proven high level fabrication skills in wood and/ or metal
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level understanding of WHS requirements in an educational wood or metal workshop environment and commitment to attending relevant WHS training


  • Knowledge and experience in the use of a wide range of machinery and hand/ power tools used in making Art & Design objects in wood and/ or metal
  • Demonstrated ability in the provision of technical instruction and inductions to groups and individuals in wood or metal
  • Experience in operating an equipment or materials storeroom/ loan service
  • Experience in the application of WHS requirements in an educational environment


  • Completion of a Degree or other tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant work experience, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any combination of education, training and/ or experience
