The School of Women’s & Children’s Health (SWCH) is comprised of the clinical disciplines of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics, and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Statistics Unit (NPESU). Clinical academics in the School are located at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney Children’s Hospital, St George and Bankstown Hospitals, with teaching contributions made in Paediatrics at the Sutherland, Liverpool and Campbelltown Hospitals.  The main administrative centre for the School is based at the Royal Hospital for Women and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick.

The Hearts and Minds Research Program was established in 2010 at the Heart Centre for Children and UNSW Sydney. Our program is part of, and supported by, UNSW Sydney and The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, including both The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. We focus on the issues that are important to children and families to better understand the complex challenges posed by childhood heart disease (and other critical and chronic health conditions), and develop new and innovative ways of transforming these challenges.


About the role

  • $73K – $98K plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • Fixed term until 31 July 2019
  • Full-time

The Post-Doctoral Clinical Research Fellow will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of several research studies investigating psychological, neurobiological, developmental and/or social aspects of critical or chronic illness in childhood, particularly heart disease. The position will involve a range of research tasks related to these studies, as well as the implementation of specific assessment protocols, coordination of data collection and interpretation, assistance with manuscript preparation, supervision of research assistants and students, and general office management and research administration.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in Psychology or related field
  • Previous experience providing research support for studies in a health-related field, particularly in the area of clinical, health or medical psychology research
  • Knowledge of evidence-based psychology practice for the range of psychological disorders and and challenges commonly experienced by children with serious medical illness and their families
  • Proven ability to be both self-directed and work in a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers
  • Proven IT skills with knowledge and experience using research-related computer programs (such as SPSS, nVivo and Endnote)
